OVERCOMING TEMPTATION

BEAIN A TALK PRESENTED TO THE CATHOLIC YOUTH ORGANIZATION (CYON) AND NIGERIAN FEDERATION OF CATHOLIC STUDENTS (NFCS) AT THEIR JOINED NIGHT VIGIL ON 3RD JUNE 2016 AT ST. FRANCIS CATHOLIC CHURCH MANCHOK

When I received the invitation to this talk, my attention was drawn to the topic, and I ask myself, why this choice. This is because almost all talks I have delivered within this five months and about three yet to be delivered at Cross River, Pankshin and  Makurdi seem to either be same, directly linked or draws much more meaning from the above theme respectively. For your part I do not know what this sounds like to you, but for me, it sounds greatly words that seem to say ‘overcoming temptation is one achievement you must attain.

Temptation have been defined as a desire or craving for something, especially something considered wrong. It is often described too as an incitement of desire or cause of desire. When the Bible says ‘the daughters of Zion are haughty, and walk with stretched forth necks and wanton eyes, walking and mincing as they go, and making a tinkling with their feet.’ Isaiah 3:16 (King James Bible) it portrays the daughters of Zion as a temptation. Let us take for granted that when some see temptation as a CAUSE of desire, he/she sees it in the point of view of Isaiah 3:16.

Temptation is part of us, it is a reality we must live with, it is a cross we must bear and it is a thorny path we must journey through victoriously. But like Jesus, this cross must bring us a CROWN and this thorny path should lead us to the THRONE as only then can we say we have proven ourselves worthy of the Christian tag. It is recorded thus: “Blessed is the man that endureth temptation: for when he is tried, he shall receive the crown of life, which the Lord hath promised to them that love him”. James 1:12.

To this end, Christ never promised his followers a sugar-sugar life on earth rather he taught us life is bitter but called us to make a sugar out of the bitter life. This he showed us through his embrace of not only the cross but much more pains before the cross. What is beautiful is that, his hanging on the cross which is largely the symbol of our way to the throne, gave us the nuggets to overcoming the pains of bearing and journeying through this ‘crossy,thorny’ path. These nuggets include, Patience, endurance, contentment, perseverance, focus to mention but these.

WHO IS LIABLE TO FACE TEMTATION
As Christians, there is an attitude we must put on, the attitude that says “temptation is our inheritance, our birth right and our meal.” A goodness that does not pass through a test of some sort is yet a goodness to be trusted. The day we chose to do good, whether as Christians, muslims, ATReligious, Buddhist, or free thinkers, we subscribe to temptation. And as Christians, on the day we buy the ‘Christ like’ name, I mean from our baptism we begin a journey into the wilderness to be tempted. “Then was Jesus led up of the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted of the devil. Matthew 4:1-4.

Again , C. S. Lewis (1898 - 1963) the Irish-born British novelist wrote in his collection of works 'The Screwtape Letters’ saying “The safest road to hell is the gradual one the gentle slope, soft underfoot, without sudden turnings, without milestones, without signposts”. As if to support Matthew Henry (1662 - 1714) the english clergyman of his words in his exposition on the Old and New Testament where he said “Many a dangerous temptation comes to us in fine gay colours that are but skin-deep”. This clearly shows that temptation never comes as temptation, most times it is seem real than any reality before us. It is also inviting as it shows of a success and or pleasure so easy to attain and it is the most beautiful of all options. But the wise easily knows its true nature as a temptation since first, it is a fact that the hard way is the holy way and beauty stands in the admiration of only weak minds led captive.

WHY OVERCOMING TEMPTATIONTEMPTATION
AN ALLEGORY OF THE "YOU", " YOURS" AND "MY, " ME"

The fact with life is that there is nothing the “You” or the “me” ever enjoys from temptation. All I need, all you need, temptation never promises as she (temptation) never dare to promise. What temptation ever promises is what only the “yours” and the “my” enjoys.

THE "YOURS" AND THE "MY" MERE POSSESSIONS OF THE "YOU" AND " ME"

The “yours” or  “My” is but a possession, or a property of the “you” as the “My”  is of the“Me”. The “You” here is the human soul, this is the substance of that call the human being. And this is that reality that shall ever be. This means it is the original, and the real you or me. My believe is that the human soul has no capacity to sin nor to do the saintly, it is just there as created and the book of Genesis 1:31 would say “God looked at everything he had made, and he was very pleased…”. All Christian literature will tell us God is good hence only goodness pleases him. If this be true, the human soul then will be a good substance and if it has any capacity then, it will be of goodness. But there is more to the soul from my point of view. I see the soul as only a receiver that is caged in it property. The only hope of the soul is the operations of the mind in relation to the body (from the abundance of the mind comes forth … )

The body that is the “Yours” of the “You” and “My” of “Me”, simply put, the material property of the immaterial soul is limited by the operations of the mind or conscience. This makes for the weakness of temptation. But the advantage temptation enjoys despite the limitations is the fact that the body, though is influenced by the mind (an immaterial property of the soul) to act, is also capable of acting independent of the influence of the mind or conscience through a uniquely independent attribute of human existence (the free will)  temptation is able to outgrow this weakness when the body though is miss led by the excesses of using this gift and attribute of human existence to spaiess the voice of the mind.

Sadly enough, the soul that is but a caged receiver from the operations of the body, receives this indirectly or on the opposite or contrary phase. This is because the soul and the body largely move in opposite directions.
Where the soul goes right, the body goes left. That is, if the one's pleasure is the other's pain. Hence, as they move in this opposite direction so they meet with each facing the opposite direction. To mean, in most cases, the soul suffers from the results of the pleasures of the body and enjoys from the result of the pains the body endures. This makes me reason that when Christ says “pick up your cross and follow me”, he meant suffer the body for the pleasures of the soul.

More worrisome is the fact that the soul suffers or enjoys eternally while the body suffers or enjoys temporally. Surface therefore to say, it is only great foolishness yielding to temptation that only aims at given some temporal pleasures to the outer destruction of an everlasting and ever living soul for the soul never dies. Yielding to temptation is as foolish as a man who is healthy and normal in his senses but chose to walk naked to keep is cloth from getting wet by the drizzling of rain.Here we have seen that we must overcome temptation because:
- We enjoy nothing good from yielding to it.
- We have the power to.
- It is foolish to yield to what we have the power against.
- Overcoming it proves our Christian worth.

TEMTATION IS HARD TO OVER COME
It was Oscar Wilde (1854 - 1900) the Irish poet, playwright, and wit. That wrote “I can resist everything except temptation”. It is a common fact that temptation is hard to overcome, but it is made easy by the ever sufficient grace of God who shall not test us more than we can pass. The devil will come with what may seem so dear to you but in fact is only dear to my flesh. A quote attributed to Theodore O'Hara (1820 - 1867) the U.S. poet and soldier. Reads thus “He's a businessman. I'll make him an offer he can't refuse”. This describes the Wight of temptation and explains why it may seem so difficult to over come.

HOW DO I OVERCOME TEMPTATION
When options are set before me, the first question I most ask first what each option appeals to, pleasure to my soul or body and then ask what would Jesus' answer be on each of these options if he should be in my place now. The Bible said “And when the woman saw that the tree was
- good for food, and that it was
- pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to
- be desired to make one wise”. Genesis 3:6-7.

Food in the literal sense is for the body the woman was to overcome this temptation by replying the devil in Jesus’ words.  “man shall not live by bread alone” (Matthew 4:4).
Again seeing that what the tempter offered was pleasant to the eyes and not the soul, shows it appealed for her worship of the tree. Lord Byron (1788 - 1824) the British poet will say: “Pleasure's a sin, and sometimes sin's a pleasure”. Put Jesus in the woman’s shoe would say “the scripture says worship the Lord your God and serve only him” (Luke 4:8).

The desire for wisdom when done wrongly will only bread pride. And since God had told both woman and man they shall die should they eat of the tree. What the woman did with regard to ‘C’ above is test to see, would she be wise as the tempter suggests or die as God said there by putting the Lord to the test Jesus in Mathew4:7 would reply “the scripture says, do not put the Lord your God to the test.”

KNOW YOUR TEMPTATION
 I am not so afread of temptation because I know that which is not profitable to me cannot tempt me. But I seek wisdom because I know it is that which is profitable to me that could be used against me.

STAND AGAINST THE FORCE OF TEMPTATION
Watch and pray, that ye enter not into temptation: the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak (Matthew 26:41). It is of great importance that a Christian should be prayerful for the powers against us are much more beyond flesh and blood. The best and strongest prayer ever is one that says “Lord lead me not into temptation.”

KNOW WHO YOU ARE
One fact you must know is that you are call to sainthood by your baptism you have been marked to be a saint and the father of sin is the one foe against you. Jean Anouilh (1910 - 1987) a French dramatist says “saintliness is also a temptation”.

CALL TEMPTATION BY IT'S NAME
The problem with my generation is that we baptize sin and makes it simple to commit. To overcome temptation, we must call our temptation by it name. call sin by it name and the devil too should be call the devil.
Be Contented: what you do not have is what you do not need. What you want is not always what you need. So what you have is just that which you need hold on to it. Thomas Gray (1716 - 1771) British poet affirms that “Not all that tempts your wand'ring eyes and heedless hearts, is lawful prize; Nor all that glisters, gold”.

LADY KNOW THE MAN
Man is the greatest thread to woman when it comes to temptation. Sadly, she appears ignorant of that. At the end she cries in the words of Anthony Burgess (1917 - 1993) British writer and critic that says “He said it was artificial respiration but now I find I'm to have his child”. The woman should know well enough “Not trust a husband too far, nor a bachelor too near as Helen Rowland (1876 - 1950) the U.S. writer, journalist, and humorist would say. She should know too that not all men who come to her professing love that really loves her. Alfred Tennyson (1809 - 1892) the British poet say:

“Man is the hunter; woman is his game:  The sleek and shining creatures of the chase,  We hunt them for the beauty of their skins”.
The man will enjoy her only while she’s kind; But when she dances in the wind and shakes the wings, and will not stay he puff the prostitute away. John Dryden (1631 - 1700). As a lady you should read the mans lips and  think ahead of the him through his words. And when you realize his words would lead you astray, simply say to him politely “if you don't mind me saying so, this conversation is getting a little strange I have something to do. Then go away for good.

MAN KNOW THE LADY
Harry S. Truman (1884 - 1972) U.S. president made a statement to reporters on his 75th birthday, he said: “Three things ruin a man, power, money, and women. I never wanted power, I never had any money, and the only woman in my life is up at the house right now. Even the devil should rebuke Belial when he suggest you should be tempted through a woman as in Mark Twain’s ‘Paradise Regained’   because you already know, that is the worst temptation you should pray hard not to face. Robert Burton (1577 - 1640) an English scholar and churchman said in his The Anatomy of Melancholy. “I may not here omit those two main plagues, and common dotages of human kind, wine and women, which have infatuated and besotted myriads of people. They go commonly together. Tertullian (160? - 220?) will say to men; face the woman when she tempts you and say to her  “And do you know that you are an Eve? God's sentence hangs over all your sex and His punishment weighs down upon you. You are the devil's gateway; it was you who first violated the forbidden tree and broke God's law...You should always go in mourning and rags.

WATCH YOUR DRESSING
Watch how you dress lest you lead someone to sin or be let to temptation by a misrepresentation of yourself. Know too you are address the way you dress. A Hindustani proverb says “Open chests tempt even the righteous”.
Beware of Wealth: Do not wish for too much, if you have, be master of that which you possess. Andrew Carnegie (1835 - 1919) says “The vast majority of the sons of rich men are unable to resist the temptations which wealth subjects them to, and sink to unworthy lives”.

CONCLUSION
We all agree the devil tempts through what man so desires most, Food, Power and the pleasures of the flesh. It better said, once you know the problem, you are better equipped to face it. Temptations will come, when they come let them achieve the purpose for which they are allowed to meet you, which is  to prove you a true Christian worthy of God’s throne. Never forget. Prayer is your strongest weapon, wisdom, your code and focus your middle name for since we know where we are going, we should know the vehicle that will carry us there safely. May the ever living Lord grant us the necessary graces we need against temptation as together we pray:  “Lord lead us not into temptation.”

[Discussion Continues] IT WAS NOT IN MY INTENTION TO TAKE IT TO THIS END BUT WHY NOT IF YOU WANT IT THIS WAY

The piece from where this continues generated a lot of controversies as expected. This is so on the fact that the writers is the word and the readers is the interpretation. Also for the sake of reading without studying. A very view read it through the authors mind, others supported the writer because they feel it favours there blindfold, others totally got their nerves on the wild and would probably be still mad at the writer because they feel the piece was designed against their blindfold, some others simply remind indifrent while the rest got critical but injected some bias thoughts their blindfold brought hence got it all twisted.

WHY THE INTERMISSION
You may want to wonder and ask why intermission, Was it necessary, wouldn't he had just made his point than play with our intelligence? Sorry, but the purpose had been achieved which was to set the record right that our world view have been so dark colored by our blindfolds (sentemets) that our view of things is totally one sided and something close to being myopic. A christian will first see the Islamist in the writings than the facts and falls of his piece, an Islamist will first see the Christian in the writer than the facts and falls of his piece, so much so that we see how unqualify we each are to talk on religions we do not follow forgetting knowledge is vast. On the political realm, we APC members will see the hate in a PDP member talking about Buhari even when he says "Buhari is good" same will PDP members first see the hate in an APC member to PDP when he chooses to talk on PDP.
Back on the piece you could see that majority read the book by the cover, many of them never noticed the fact I established something that suggest the fact that the change we want and expected is not the change we see. (Different varying definitions)

THE CHANGE
APC promised us change, PDP promised us Transformation in their respective campaigns. The Change have come, we live with it, but do not understand it. I cannot recall any body asking APC what change they offer us. Change can be to anything good or bad. If APC's definition of change was removing PDP from power, have they not achieved it? If Olamide's definition of change was "Bihari and Osigbanjo" as he sang has he not achieved his change? If most Northern Muslims definition of change was to remove Goodluck Ebele Jonathan from power have they not achieved their change?. That is on the one end which is to say our satisfaction lays on the definition of what change is. My frequent follows will rightly know that my first article with regards to the present administration was a call to Buhari on his definition of fighting Corruption where I called for a redirection since I noticed he was fighting what I called the crime of corruption and not corruption itself.

ON TRANSMISSION
It will be with little or nor wit if anyone will say there is nor transformation ongoing even though the present administration did not promised transformation as a word but change which in a way is transformation.
Transformatoon is a marked change in appearance or character, especially one for the better. It is not something that will go through legislative processes nor is it something that goes only when the going is soft but even when the going gets tough. I recall I was asked what the change and the transformation are. Now I answer that the change is the transformation we see. And what is the transformation?

I leaved in a society where everyone seem to be waiting for government for their daily bread. A society where a very good farmer waves the farm, sacrifice his tools for a white paper they call employment letter. It was a society where as soon as government offers a person his so called "pensionable work" he sacrifices all his potentials. In that society I lived there was a youth running a car wash business, if what he told me was true, he was saving two thousand Nigerian naira a day after, but he abandoned that business and was careless about it till it gradually died off, cote-cee a primary school teaching government employment.

In this same society I lived largely among civil servants who spend all their earnings in advance and even spend far above their earnings. This made almost all of them
Professional deptors only for their stomach and not even a better live or an investment of some sort.

I lived in a society where Local government workers only come to office at month end to claim their salaries. A society where the politician is a god that must not be talked ill of even if he were wrong. I society where any body can be anything at whatever time.

I lived in a society where a party member card was enough to give you whatever you wanted. A society with an identity card that was not as useful as the party card. It was a society free to air through b
Disgusted doom.

I lived in a society where the widow, Widower, and Opherns live in hell even when their Fathers, Mothers, Husbands and wives have worked and left enough death benefits for then to live on. A society where out of share heartlessness people enjoy other people's death benefits living their love ones suffer much more hell than allocated them by the demise of their love ones.

It was a society where there was high unemployment rate yet there was enough vacancies for the sons and daughters of party excos and members, highly placed personalities, politicians, Directors, Local Government education sacretaries e.t.c even when such children were not quified.

A society where children of the oppotuned get paid salaries even from tender age, monies they never worked for yet the life of the view workers were pathetic under the guise of the norm that hides in the claim of no sufficient funds.


A society that the grand norm seem to suggest keeping the poor in perpetual poverty for loyalty sake. That society where every on wants to be the all in all in his locality and can do anything what so ever so sacrifices communal unity for self glory. That time when our brothers will hide our files to ensure we do not get promoted at work. When the would rather sale any opportunity they have to the stranger and sale it at home let alone given it freely.

A society where infrastructural development was poor and In some localities unavailable yet in paper it was available. And no one knows but the beneficiary.

A society where everything can go wrong with little fellows or now fellow at all saying anything about it possible because the master was one, his house was one so to speak against the masters house was to speak against one house.

And politics generally became a dirty game with may parents, religious leaders, ... Barnning their subjects from joining. That time when the only lier known was a politician.

WHERE THEN IS THE TRANSFORMATION IN ALL THIS

The point here is not in the act of better things that have come but if the fact that the bad things are now seen and felt by all against the tradition of old when it was only the poor that see feel the pains of it. That is to say, I am not saying the miracle have come but I am saying the problem is known and the first stage of solving a problem is knowing the problem.

Today almost everyone knows well not to depend on government but to find their sources of livelihood that will complement whatever penny the get from the government. We seem to all agree that government work should be a sort of additional means of livelihood and not to replace our earlier means of livelihood. Isn't that transformation and change.

Today also, many of the civil servants in my locality knows well to cut their coat a little less than their sizes so that the can save some for other purposes rather than live on a higher cost and remaining slaves to those they are incepted to forever.
In the same society, where for years I like many others have been preaching self reliance, entrepreneurial developments, savings and investments to no avail, today on their own the are being resourceful.
For instance, in my nighbourhood alone we have three to four shops ranging from profession stores, mini coca-cola depot, kitchen utensils store, and betteringtwo saloons of the respective sexs all owned by civil servants who never saw the need for an investment before. And all this began within this year cot-cee the cahnfe hardship.
We now have teachers and other civil servants on road transport business about six of them that I can identify and this does not affect their commitments to work in any way as they have peoples running this things for them and God's faithfulness abiding with them.

Furthermore the farms are busy. For every moment I turn and see the ginger, the corn, the ground nuts, the maize, the beans (Mada, waken gida, and Achi-shuru) particularly, and many more farm produce that are entering into the homes of civil servants how have said bye to farming, I am on able to say a word but Thank the Lord as I ask, Is that not Transformation? Is that not change?

Today everyone seem to be extra careful with the work God have so bless him with, there is a positive turn on things with regards to attaining to official needs as should. That too is a transformation, it is a change.

Today there is a down turn on the power of party membership and cards in and appreciable manner with regards to influencing benefits especially illegally. That too is T&C.

Today we know the secret of the pains the widows, widowers, and "orphans had to suffer, we know a very good number of those heartlessly enjoying benefits of the death of those the have no formal affiliation to. We know many who were offered replacement jobs illegally bearing the names of the death, or claiming monies in the name of the death there by denying relatives of the dead their lost one's benefits. Is that knowledge a lone not change, is it not Transforming.

Though the unemployment is still there, but today we know those who have stopped meaningful and positive development, we know those who earn what the do don't deserve, we have a drastic reduction in the number of unqualified workers who have occupied the places of the qualified. We know those whose affiliations have granted them some favours even above their seniors but now are back to where the rightly belong. Is that not change? Is that not Transformation.

Today, it is not only the poor that suffers the hardship, the recession, and what ever ill our doing and undoing is causing but largely everyone each according to what his statues deserves. Is there no change, is there no Transformation? Would things not more easily solved and bear if we are on this same page?

Today we know a lot of areas who lack schools, water, electricity, schools, ... Simply because in the papers it is recorded projects as such have been awarded, executed and are in use. The knowledge of it is a change and Transforming.

Today there are two strong masters, two hauses, I can tell the master of house "A" his ills and be protected by house "B" and the table would still serve same purpose when turned over. That is a great transformation, that is a change.

Today there seem to be a sound the sings, politics is not so dirty, we cannot do without involvement, everyone in every field can be saint or sinner. And politics is gradually regaining respect as deserved. Transformation and change it is.

If APC is doing us good, it is changing us, it is transforming us, if they are doing us bad, it is changing us, it is trnsformaing us. [Positivity, Objectivity, Critical mindedness]

Tracing the ROOT of evil amidst THE goodness of creation (all God created he found very good)

INTRODUCTION
Good and evil are often qualities attributed to objects, actions, and ideas. Generally, what is good is thought to be beneficial and what is evil is thought to be harmful, Many philosophers and scholars have contributed immensely on the debate regarding “Good” and “Evil”, solutions on problems of evil proposed, but still more, defining good and evil remains a central question of ethics.
As Christian theology began to emerge in the 3rd and 4th centuries, the problem of evil became particularly challenging because Christianity was committed to the existence of an all-powerful, benevolent God but at the same time acknowledged the existence of evil. At the end of the 4th century St. Augustine formulated the solution that has the greatest influence on subsequent Christian thinkers. As a young man, Augustine had accepted the dualistic theology of Manichaeism. The later influence of Neoplatonism prepared him for his conversion to Christianity and his theological reconciliation of the Christian belief in a benevolent God, the creator of everything that exists, with the pervasive presence of evil in the world. According to Augustine, evil has not been created by God, whose creation is entirely good.
TOWARDS A DEFINATION:
Understanding the term Evil and Good is paramount in a study as this.
GOOD: The New 8th Edition Oxford Advanced Learners Dictionary (International Student’s Edition) sees good as …high quality or an acceptable standard, that which is pleasant that you enjoy or want. e.t.c.
Evil While it (NOALD) sees evil as that which is morally bad and cruel, extremely unpleasant, a force that causes bad things to happened. e.t.c.
Evil is again seen in Encyclopedia Britannica as that which is morally bad or wrong, or that which causes harm, pain, or misery.
Permit me present you with my theological ‘kind’ definition of good and evil. As I theologian that I am not, will see good as God and evil as the absence of God.
GOOD AND EVIL
Many times we mistake good and evil as two distinct entities that exist independently of each other and as created things especially in our study of the terms. Some scholars hold that evil do not exist while others see it as exiting, some see it as a product of the devil while others will say God made evil for a purpose. But others like St. Augustine will say God did not create evil, this his so held as the book of Genesis will forever hold that “everything that God created is good. However, it is this first divinely inspired book’s claim that will cause the problem of evil. This is so because the problem of evil arises if it is accepted that evil exists in a universe created and governed by a supreme being (God) who is both good and omnipotent (all powerful).
The Greek philosopher Epicurus (Epicureanism), in addressing the problem of evil holds that it is either God can prevent evil and chooses not to (and therefore is not good) or chooses to prevent it and cannot (and therefore is not all-powerful)
We can argue all the length but there is one fact we cannot dispute which is that good and evil exist in the world, for instance we cannot dispute the fact that the Lion and the sheep will not see face to face, to the sheep, the lion is an evil creature. Snake and man cannot walk side by side for to the snake man is evil and to man the snake is evil. Back to the human world, some nations, races e.t.c. cannot meet and part in smiles for both see each other as evil. Some see it as a taboo for their daughters to marry the others because of the evil in the former vice-versa.   Now, holding these facts will lead us to questioning the root of Good and evil.
 But there is yet another fact, that God is the Creator of everything, and everything God created is good, but let us reverse back to the first established fact of the existence of evil above. If God created everything, and everything God created is good yet there exist evil, the question here will be; who created Evil?
Let us suppose like St. Augustine that indeed God did not create evil, for everything God created is indeed good. Let us here revisit my definition of good and evil above however with some modification though without distorting facts, above I defined good as God and Evil as the absence of God. The modification here is that we will define evil by replacing “God” as in the above definition with “good” which will give us the definition of evil as the absence of good, that is, Evil is the privation of good, as darkness is the absence of light. While good is the trueness of a thing or the fulfillment of the purpose of being, that is fulfilling the purpose for which a thing is created. For instance;
 A gun is good to it owner when it kills his oppressor or better still target, it becomes evil when in the process of shooting it harms it owner.
 A car is good to it’s owner but evil when through it, it’s owner dies.
 A dog is good so long as it performs the purpose of protecting and alerting it’s owner in times of danger, it becomes evil when it harms it’s owner or destroys his/her belonging.
This then will mean that, while good is the natural purpose of creation evil is the failure to attain the purpose of creation. This will lead us to the next problem which is to establish if God who created everything with a purpose will turn a hindrance to that goal. Many would already have answered it as impossible but that answer will also pose another question: If not God then who?
As we live in this world, we struggle to make it in life and for a perfect life, we do everything within our power to achieve the goals we set for ourselves, in that struggle there comes a time we must cross other’s boundaries if we must achieve our goals, then we see the owners of such a boundary we must cross into as the enemy of our goal who we must overcome in whatever way there by bringing in the issue of rivalry.
Let us take the risk of bringing God’s purpose for creation and it achievements to the level of man’s struggle to make ends meet. Hence the question, is there an enemy that God must cross into his boundary for the purposes of creation to be achieved? But we have agreed above that God created everything which suggests he owns everything, there by saying there are no boundaries when dealing with God and the created things. If that is the case, but among the created things there is the human who is created above everything else, in him is freedom to do everything, he wills, possibly such a creature giving his freedom and other privileges when backed with pride stand the chance of comparing himself with God, if so, then where God uses his power over man it is possible that such a proud fellow could see God as an enemy to his success. Again the question, has God and enemy?
This lead us into the parable of the weeds Mathew’s gospel 13:24-30, 36-43 where the master (God) is said to have planted (Creation) good seeds (the created things) in the field (world) and his servants (Angels) visiting the field beheld bad weeds (evil) … and God said ‘the Evil one has done this…” who will God refer to as the evil one, is it Man or Satan. Let us presume here it is Satan since he is the highest of all that dare to equal God. But if that be the case what of the second fact established above which says all God created is good. Does it not mean that even Satan himself is a creature of God who created all things and created them good? This then will lead us to the issue of free-will.
THE FREE-WILL
Man as we know is created with free-will, though God has a purpose for all creatures, he subject his creation on earth to man and as if that is not enough he granted man a free-will. By free-will we mean man’s power or ability of using the mind to choose a course of action or make a decision without being subject to restraints imposed by antecedent causes, by necessity, or by divine predetermination.
A completely freewill act is itself a cause and not an effect. The question of human beings’ ability to determine their actions is important in philosophy, particularly in metaphysics and ethics, and in theology. Generally, the extreme doctrine in which freedom of the will is affirmed is termed libertarianism; its opposite, determinism, is the doctrine that human action is not willed freely, but is rather the result of such influences as passions, desires, physical conditions, and external circumstances beyond the control of the individual. Giving the fact of the free-will of man, it is possible for a created good to diminish in goodness, to become corrupted, and evil. He becomes corrupt as a result of abuse of  the free-will. Evil crept in when creatures endowed with free will (angels, such lesser spirits as demons, and human beings) turn away from higher  or more complete goods and choose lesser, partial ones.  This means possibly evil originates from the human world not from creation and if evil originates from the human world, it follows that human’s has the power to destroy evil.
Evil did not begin with the fall of Adam, we trace the origin of evil back to the fall of Lucifer which a close look at will proof such a fall as a product of pride, we can therefore say, evil originate from pride, pride the mother of all evil distort God’s plan and brings condemnation on man. In the scripture we read that the wages of sin is death which suggest that without sin there is no death. It is worth while for Bishop Bagobiri to say “if there is any body among us who have never sinned, he shall not die.” My Lord’s claim is supported by the churches teaching on the assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Because she was sinless, she never experienced death. With that we can say without fear of contradiction that God created good and man created evil.
WHAT THEN IS THE WAY OUT
We have established that evil is a product of the human world and we are here today gathered resolve to over come evil with good as the theme of this convention suggests. On the way out we must channel the same strength we used in committing evil to doing God. Let us borrow a leave from paul, in his address to the people of Jerusalem in the Acts of Apostles 22:3-16 as Saul of Tarsus defined his root and his early life, but  as Paul,  he show how he embarked on a mission to Damascus to bring Christians in chains to Jerusalem for judgment and massacre when he hit the Rock which brought Paul to a rebirth where he redirected same energy in preaching the gospel. At his early life it was a matter of misconception a reason why immediately he saw the light he implore  equal zeal and commitment. So like Paul our theme today suggest that we have hit the Rock and have seen a light, we must redirect the same strength we use in committing evil into doing good, we must replace hate with love, malice with forgiveness, greed with charity, idleness with hardwork and dedication and more importantly pride with humility but more. By way of summary we must replace the devil in us with God. We are called here to be an example for the world. It is a known fact that even our faith is challenged by evil of the society, however, amidst all this challenges, we are called to live the faith and living the faith amidst the evil of the society on those living such a faith will entail correcting such evil  with good. Hence the mega question: How can we do good when all around us is bad? How can we love when the whole community is filled with hate. The simple answer to such questions is; ‘applied faith (faith lived or living the faith)’ and this is the summary of overcoming evil with good. We must not compromise our faith because of challenges we are facing, if it is the nature of evil to destroy, it is our nature to build so let evil not stop us from achieving our nature simply because she (evil) carry out her nature, as evil destroys ours is to built tirelessly.
CONCLUSION
We attempt a look at evil’s origin which we conclude it is in the abuse of free-will a privilege given the human race, however recognizing such a freedom as coming with chains since it is a freedom with responsibility we venture to look at the possibility of overcoming evil which we suggest given it origin from the human world it the solution lays on the human world which is in recognizing it as evil and against nature, we seek to use the fullness of nature in itself who is God to solve it which is using good. With this in mind Let Us Pray: Lord shine fort your light on us gathered here today that we may redirect the strength so far abused and replace our misplaced identities with You and for You that through us others too may find meaning in life. Turn us into instruments of radical conversion which our generation needs now, check our evil desires, silence our evil tendencies that at the dawn of your coming we may with joy awaken to meet you after a life well spend. This we ask through your son Jesus Christ who lives with you and the Holy Spirit, God, forever and ever. Amen.
